Intercity to host big boxing

INTERCITY Boxing Academy plans to host an internatio­nal boxing championsh­ip at Mulungushi Internatio­nal Conference Centre in Lusaka.

Intercity Boxing Academy director Francis Muchemwa said the boxing championsh­ip to be held in September with the theme “Knock Out Malaria” would feature boxers from foreign countries.

Muchemwa said K750,000 had been set as the total budget for the successful hosting of the boxing championsh­ip, which would be used to raise resources for the ght against malaria.

Muchemwa said some of the resources raised during the boxing championsh­ip would be used to buy mosquito nets, which would be donated to various communitie­s.

He said the academy had so far raised K150,000 for its maiden boxing championsh­ip organised by the academy establishe­d two months ago.

Muchemwa urged the corporate world to collaborat­e with Intercity Boxing Academy in its quest to improve the standards of boxing in Zambia.

e internatio­nal tournament will have a total of nine bouts, ve of which will be supporting contests, four title bouts of which three are national titles.

For the rst time in Zambia two of the title ghts will involve female boxers while the main title bout will see Hilary Kataya, who won an eliminatio­n bout in Zimbabwe in May, facing a boxer from either South Africa or the United Kingdom.

Gowa says the academy seeks to change the livelihood of boxers by ensuring that participan­ts are rewarded with reasonable prizes that would sustain their survival as well as encourage more to take up boxing as a career.
