WOMAN DUMPS DAY-OLD BABY IN PIT-LATRINE

- By JOSSY CHAIMA By ROGERS KALERO

AN unidentified woman in Kitwe dumped a day-old baby in a pit-latrine, which was retrieved by the fire brigade but later died at the hospital.

The baby was dumped in a pit-latrine in St Anthony Township in Kitwe in the early UPND president Hakainde Hichilema should learn to be calm in pursuing his political ambitions or else he will not make any meaningful achievement, a Patriotic Front (PF) cadre has warned.

PF member and Kitwe businessmen Humphrey Mwanjisi said Mr Hichilema had failed to provide inspirational leadership in his party and to Zambians in general because he lacked objectivity.

He said in Kitwe in an interview that the UPND leader should learn to be humble and calm in all situations.

Mr Mwanjisi was reacting to media reports which quoted Mr Hichilema as saying that the PF’s rejection of the re-introduction of the office of Deputy Minister was another ‘don't Kubeba’ which his party had already unearthed.

But Mr Mwanjisi said the leader of the largest opposition party was failing to be objective because he was being driven by anger and frustration.

"We expect Mr Hichilema to provide inspirational leadership by being objective and giving credit where it is due, but we are disappointed with his tantrums towards the PF hours of Thursday, prompting residents and police to call for help from the Kitwe City Council fire brigade.

Council public relations manager Roy Kuseka said the fire brigade retrieved the live baby from the pit-latrine and rushed it to Kitwe Teaching Hospital.

Mr Mwanjisi said, instead of attacking the PF over the National Dialogue Forum (NDF) proposals, the UPND leader and his members should take an introspection on why its alliances with other political parties had always been crumbling.

He said the UPND leadership should also take an introspection on why most political bigwigs who were joining the party ended up dumping the party for similar reasons.

"We have had political bigwigs dumping PF for UPND, but less than a year, they resign from the party to re-join the PF. Why is this the case? Phoeby Chileya confirmed receiving the baby on Thursday morning, but unfortunately it died the same day around 20:00 hours.

In an interview, Ms Chileya said doctors suspect that the baby's exposure to the cold could have led to its death.

"Management wishes to confirm that the baby that we received yesterday morning So, instead of insulting the PF and President Lungu, the UPND should find answers to these questions.

"We know what he did to Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, Canisius Banda, Major Richard Kachingwe and others who joined the

UPND, but later regretted joining the opposition party,'' he said. (Thursday) died around 20:00.

We are sad as we had hoped that the baby would survive," she said.

Ms Chileya said the baby girl weighed one kilogramme at the time it was admitted adding that it had difficulties in breathing when it was brought in. last night
