‘Release money for sanitary towels’
GOVERNMENT should release money from this year’s budget for the provision of sanitary towels to girls in schools, the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) has said.
YWCA Northern Region coordinator Sharon Chisenga said Government had initially allocated a budget line to provide sanitary towels to school going children which had yielded no results so far.
Ms Chisenga appealed to Government to quickly execute the budget line towards the programme.
She said the provision of sanitary towels to the girl- child in schools would prevent them from being disadvantaged in attaining quality education.
Ms Chisenga said a good number of girls in community schools were missing classes because they did not have access to the commodity, which she said was negatively affecting their education.
There was a need to equalise access to education in schools despite class of a learner.
Ms Chisenga hailed the non- governmental institutions providing sanitary towels to women in correctional facilities. She said women in correctional facilities did not have access to sanitary towels as they lived in isolation.
She commended the private companies that were providing the sanitary towels because a woman’s body was delicate and needed proper hygiene.
Ms Chisenga urged the companies to extend their support to schools countrywide. the social
