…Unconditional meeting most likely

- By SILUMESI MALUMO

‘‘The development was commendable because it would bring peace among Zambians especially the UPND and the Patriotic Front Mr. Mucheleka (PF) members.’’

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema is likely to meet President Edgar Lungu without the involvement of church mother bodies, a senior party official has revealed. The senior official who did not want to be identified for fear of victimisation revealed that Mr Hichilema was willing to meet the Head of State as it would help with national healing. The source said the development was commendable because it would bring peace among Zambians especially the UPND and the Patriotic Front members. “If truly our president Mr Hichilema meets President Lungu, it will be a major milestone as peace will prevail in the country,” the source said. The source observed that the two political parties’ members had been involved in fights especially during campaigns because of the serious hatred which they had between them. The source said the conflicts between the two political parties would surely vanish if the two leaders met. The ball, he said, to change the political atmosphere in the country was in the hands of the two leaders hence the need for them to make a step to reconcile. “I think after some advice from various stakeholders the need for the big man to meet President Lungu without the church mother bodies has not been ignored. I heard something like he really wants to meet Mr Lungu without fail because this is an opportunity to reconcile and ensure that peace prevailed in the country. “I think the big man has reflected and he has thought that Zambia is bigger than him and President Lungu. I think this is a great thing and this is what we have been waiting for as a party so that we see peace prevail in the country,” the source said. The source said soon Mr Hichilema would call for an appointment to meet the Head of State. Recently, Mr Hichilema said he had been more than ready to meet President Lungu but insisted that the talks should be presided over by the church mother bodies. Later Mr Hichilema in his tweet said Zambia was bigger than himself and President Lungu hence the need to meet. The senior official said the tweet by Mr Hichilema showed that he had rescinded his decision to involve the church mother bodies.
