In a statement Mr Kanganja said that he had information that criminal-minded people were planning to incite others to cause anarchy in Katuba.
He, however, warned that the Zambia Police Service was more than determined and ready to bring the perpetrators to book.
“The tendency of ambushing the peace-loving electorates by some people as experienced in previous by-elections will not be tolerated,” he warned. As a preventive measure, he said, more police officers had been deployed to beef up the current manpower so as to enhance security. Mr Kanganja said the increase in the number of officers deployed was basically intended to protect the electorate and all other stakeholders as well as repel any imminent disruption of the good order and peace that has prevailed since the inception of campaigns. The IG reiterated the importance of maintaining the peace by political players so as to avoid spoiling the peaceful environment that has so far prevailed in Katuba constituency and other areas from the time the campaigns started.
“My re-assurance to people of Katuba constituency and other parts of the country where by-elections are taking place is that police will ensure that the areas are violence free during and after the election, as guided by the laws of Zambia,” Mr Kanganja said.
He also congratulated and thanked the peace-loving electorates for refusing and denouncing violence.
He further urged them to report to police perpetrators and inciters of violence so that they were brought to book.
The tendency of ambushing the peaceloving electorates by some people as experienced in previous byelections will not be tolerated,” — Mr Kanganja.
