TWENTY Mtendere residents of Section D have been reprimanded for indiscriminate dumping of waste by the Lusaka City Council (LCC) public health department has said.
LCC public relations manager George Sichimba said the 20 residents failed to subscribe to any waste management system and it was established that they were among residents who had turned a school ground into a dumping site.
Mr Sichimba said the practice was contrary to Statutory Instrument No. 12 of 2018 (Street Vending and Nuisances), Local Government (Solid Waste Management) Regulation No. 100 of 2011 and the Public Health Act CAP 295 of the Laws of Zambia.
Mr Sichimba said the affected residents had been warned several times, but to
no avail forcing the council to take the legal route.
Mr Sichimba said the matter had since been submitted to legal department for commencement of legal action in the Fast Track Court.
Mr Sichimba said the local authority has since warned other residents who could be in the habit of dumping waste indiscriminately that they risk prosecution.
"Investigations into indiscriminate dumping of waste in the area has continued and many more residents are likely to be affected.
“The council is however working with other partners and has been conducting cleaning and sensitisation activities in that section of Mtendere but some residents do not want to change their behaviour, said Mr Sichimba.
The matter had since been submitted to legal department for commencement of legal action in the Fast Track Court.
