Malunga cautions boxers

- By MICHAEL MIYOBA

ORIENTAL Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) manager Christopher Malunga has cautioned boxers to maintain discipline as they focus on their respective fights set for October 19 at Government Complex in Lusaka.

Speaking after announcing OQBP boxer opponents for next month’s fight at the Government complex, Malunga said there is need for boxers to avoid getting involved in activities which may tarnish their images as professional boxers.

Malunga said he will not tolerate undisciplined boxers because OQBP is a serious boxing stable determined to produce world champions.

“Those who will not want to maintain discipline will not be part of us. I will not tolerate indiscipline because our promotion is a serious promotion which has produced so many African champions,” Malunga said.

Meanwhile Malunga announced that former World Boxing Council (WBC) Champion Catherine Phiri will fight Yarkor Chavez from Ghana in a non-title super bantamweight fight while Alfred Muwowo will face Mushin Kizota from Tanzania in an Africa Boxing Union ABU Bantamweight title fight.

Malunga said the fights for both Catharine and Muwowo are important because they will be used to prepare the boxers who are set to challenge for WBC titles.

“Alfred has to be active for him to be rated for the WBC and I feel that it is important that he fights for the WBC bout but that can’t be done if he is not active so it is very important that we keep him active.

“Cathrine Phiri’s bout is also very important because it is a preparatory fight for the WBC title fight,” Malunga said.

And Phiri has promised her fans a good fight when she takes on the Ghanian boxer who she described as a good boxer despite not knowing much about her opponent.

Phiri said she will prepare adequately for the Ghanian to give her fans a win after the last defeat to Kenyan Fatuma Zarika in a WBC title fight.

“I know nothing about the Ghanian Boxer but I know that she is a boxer preparing for the fight so I have to train hard and follow what the coach is going to put up on the table and I will be ready for her on October 19,” Phiri said.

Africa Boxing Union (ABU) flyweight champion Alfred has warned his opponent from Tanzania to expect a brutal fight. Muwowo said he is a fighter determined to put up a very good fight when he takes on Mushin Kizota from Tanzania in an ABU Bantamweight title fight.

In other fights set for October 19th, Remmie Simbeye from Oriental Qualies will fight Bazila Ngosa from Inter-City Boxing Academy while David Mwale will fight Phillmon Hara from Evergreen in a six round bantamweight fight.

MobelaLA Mukuni will represent OQBP in a featherweight fight against Pythias Chisenga from Inter City Boxing Academy while Cosmas Chanda from Chililabombwe will fight Derick Mwape from Chingola in a four round bantamweight fight.
