Guide politicians gone astray, church prodded

- By SIMON MUNTEMBA in Chinsali

The church should not ignore its own daughters and sons who have gone to work for the people in the name of politics to lose their worthiness,”

— President Lungu.

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has challenged the church to give guidance to their members who have gone astray in the name of politics.

President Lungu wondered why the Church had continued turning a blind eye to the behaviour of their Christian members who are politicians.

The Head of State said this yesterday in Chinsali when he attended a church service at Chinsali main United Church of Zambia (UCZ).

Mr Lungu who bemoaned the bad language and behaviour by some Christian politicians, said the church had failed the nation as it was unable to deal with its members who had gone astray in the name of politics.

President Lungu, who quoted Mathew 5:13, said he was shocked by the silence from the church when its members were going against the Bible teachings with impunity.

"I get shocked when I see Christians from UCZ, Catholic, SDA who are politicians and supposed to be salt and light of the earth misbehave in the name of politics. And the church is just looking.

"The church should not ignore its own daughters and sons who have gone to work for the people in the name of politics to lose their worthiness," President Lungu said.

Mr Lungu said there was need to for the Church to help government in bringing Christian values into national politics by not ignoring the wrongs committed by its members.

"But I am afraid the church in Zambia is failing us. When we join politics, you don't tell us that you're the light of the world," he said.

So going forward more and more Christians should join politics so that salt and light that they have can be in politics, Mr Lungu said.

Speaking earlier, UCZ Muchinga Province Presbytery Bishop, Reverend Festus Chulu, thanked President Lungu for being the first sitting President to have worshipped at the Chinsali Main UCZ church.

The clergy man said the church was happy the government under President Lungu had continued to maintain peace and good relationship with the church in Zambia.

Bishop Chulu also commended Government for developmental projects taking place in the province saying the church was alive to the fact his administration had made strides in improving the lives of Zambians.

Bishop Chulu, in particular, praised Government for constructing and commissioning Isoka Trades Training Institute which would equip young people with survival skills.

He was also happy that the ChinsaliNakonde Road was worked on and that schools fees had been reduced.
