THE water levels for power generation at the Kariba Dam in Siavonga have reached their lowest point in 24 years, Zambezi River Authority Senior Manager, Water resources and environmental Management Boniface Mfula has disclosed.
Mr Mfula said the water levels were at 478.66m which is 3.16m above the minimum operating levels.
Mr. Mfula said the current levels were headed towards the lowest point that the Dam experienced in 1995.
He said the water in the Dam had declined significantly compared to the same period in 2018 which stood at 11 meters higher.
Mr. Mfula attributed the low water volumes to the poor rainfall season between 2018 and 2019.
He was speaking during a tour of the Kariba Dam to mark commemoration of the 2019 SADC day.
And Zambezi River Authority Director – Water Resources and Environmental Management Christopher Chisense assured that water allocated for power generation at Kariba Dam would be conserved until the next rainfall season.
Mr. Chisense said the committee that allocates water for power generation was making adjustments in the allocations to conserve the remaining volumes until the next rainfall season.
He said the remaining water was being shared equally between the two power stations in Zambia and Zimbabwe.
