TopStar invests US$273m in digital migration
ABOUT US$273 million has been invested in digital migration by TopStar, company vice president, Cliff Sichone, has said.
Mr Sichone said the investment had been distributed in the refurbishing and construction of the new studio meant to encourage digital migration in Zambia.
He said this at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday.
“Our coverages is expanding and we have over 700, 000 subscribers across the country,” Mr Sichone said.
And company Chief Executive Officer, Alex Jiany, said the investment was on going as it was an essence of digital migration.
This, Mr Jiany said, entailed that content service providers and channel owners needed to invest in rebroadcast equipment such as transmitters.
“It is however important to note that channel owners are required to pay the ZICTA approved carriage fees for their channels to be distributed on the TopStar network,” he said.
“Of importance to note is that these fees are determined by ZICTA who is the regulator while the management of the licenses TV stations is the duty of the Independent Broadcasting Authority,” Mr Jiany said.
TopStar, he said, was confident of its future and that the company would continue to boost the media industry in Zambia.
“TopStar serves a staff who work hard and support digital migration of this country. TopStar serves people who want to enjoy digital life,” he said.
“TopStar is a company which has a bright future. All we need is to boost the media industry of this country,” Mr Jiang said.
