WARMA registers 100 water drillers

- By TAWANDA MUNYUKI

ABOUT 100 drilling and exploration companies in Lusaka have been register in an effort to monitor their work, Ministry of Water Development Sanitation and Environmental Protection (MWDSEP) permanent secretary, Ed Chomba, has said.

Dr Chomba said the registration of drillers would ensure that citizens received value for their money.

He said the drillers registration would also help curtail the provision of substandard boreholes that some drilling companies were offering to customers.

Dr Chomba reiterated that registration of existing boreholes and prior authorization for drilling a borehole, would enhance management of groundwater and prevent pollution of the resources.

exercise in Lusaka, he said Water Resource Management Authority (WARMA) has engaged over 100 interns to collect information regarding borehole location and water quality testing.

He said the exercise would target over 3000 registered boreholes within Lusaka.

Dr Chomba said members of the public who had not yet registered their boreholes should to take advantage of the exercise to register their boreholes.

“This exercise is a

of the commitment made by ministry, through WARMA, to members of the public who have registered their boreholes with WARMA,” he said.

Government in 2018, passed Statutory Instruments No. 18, 19 and 20 (of 2018) to manage groundwater and boreholes as well as commence the process of regulating the drilling of boreholes and setting of borehole drilling standards.
