COWARDLY UPND MPs UNDER FIRE

- By SILUMESI MALUMO

THE Bishops Council of Zambia has described United Party for National Development (UPND) members of Parliament as stooges who just want to make noise by rejecting the Constitutional Amendment Bill number 10 of 2019. But party secretary general Stephen Katuka maintains that no UPND MP will support the bill because it is a shame.

Bishops Council of Zambia secretary general Abel Kaela said UPND lawmakers were comedians who should not be taken seriously.

It was only cowards who could fight their own input.

Double standards by the opposition

MPs was childish.

“In the first place why did these MPs even attend the National Dialogue Forum (NDF)? That is the question we want to be answered, if they knew that their party was against it.

“All we can say is that these MPs are just becoming stooges. This matter they are rejecting is a national issue. It is not a political issue, and it is not a tribal issue. Let’s not behave like animals. Let’s behave like human beings,” Bishop Kaela said.

“And to say the truth those people are not fit to be MPs. They should step down. These people are not doing anything good for the nation.”

UPND MPs were being cowards for fearing the party’s president, Hakainde Hichilema, by rejecting what they participated in during the NDF.

Bishop Kaela said the refinement of the Constitution would be attained as majority members of Parliament supported the amendment bill.

He said UPND MPs were a minority in Parliament therefore, the amendment process would not be affected.

But Mr Katuka said the Constitution Amendment Bill was a shame because it had no clause that meant well for the nation.

He said the party and all its MPs would not support something that would plunge the nation into confusion.

“The whole thing is a shame. We are not supporting anything in that document. We are not itemising that this one we support and this one we are not supporting. We are saying that the whole thing is a shame and we would not support it,” Mr Katuka said.

The amendment of the Constitution was being done illegally because under normal circumstance it should get the blessings of the majority in the House before doing anything.

“But that is not what they are doing,” Mr Katuka said.
