Teach kids our history - Chief

- By MOSES SINJWALA

GOVERNMENT should include Zambia’s history in the education curriculum in order for the younger generation to understand and learn their culture, heritage and their fallen heroes, Chief Mumbi of the Nsenga people of Eastern Province has said.

Chief Mumbi said the younger generation should know the heroes who fought for the liberation of Zambia and the only way to do that was embedding the information in the education curriculum of the country.

He said for a long time the education curriculum had never had anything pure on Zambian history and the gallant heroes who lost their lives for the country to be where it was.

He was speaking during the funeral service for Mama Veronica Mumba, the wife to the late freedom fighter Omelo Mumba.

Chief Mumbi said it was high time Zambians recognised the struggles of the country’s heroes.

He appealed to Government to erect a stature in honour of late Omelo Mumba so that his legacy could live on.

And former President Rupiah Banda described late Mama Mumba as a woman of love, peace and all embracing.

Mr Banda said Mama Mumba was a source of forgiveness and that every President in the country did pass through her because of her wisdom and the love she had for the country.

He said the lives of Mr and Ms Mumba should not be forgotten but remembered because they gave their lives to the liberation of Zambia.

Mr Banda echoed Chief Mumbi’s appeal to respect and honour all the freedom fighters who struggled to liberate the country.

"Let us give respect and honour to our heroes who were prepared to die for this country. Let honour our mother, Mama Mumba, who never became bitter with any one even when they failed but stood for the liberation of mother Zambia until her death," he said.
