CALL FOR ‘INDABA’ TO ADDRESS LAWYERS’ CONSTITUTION IMPASSE
AN extraordinary ‘‘indaba’’ should be called to resolve the imbroglio in the Law Association of Zambia, renowned lawyer Hobday Kabwe has demanded.
Mr Kabwe said the only way to stop political infiltration in the association was to call for an extraordinary indaba so that members could agree on what should be focused on instead of fighting political battles.
He said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, the current situation in the association was worrying and needed immediate intervention.
He said the members should find ways of resolving the situation as political interference had serious implications on the association.
“This current situation really, there is need for the lawyers to come together so that they look into it. When we come together we shall put in place measures that would stop this kind of lawlessness we have seen in the association,” he said.
“Such conduct where people go against the mandate of the association is saddening, so this issue need serious attention,” Mr Kabwe said.
We need to be nonpartisan, he said, so that the association could remain relevant to the society.
He said the association could lose its credibility in society if it was infiltrated by active politics.
Mr Kabwe said the current criticism of the LAZ leadership was merely political interference.
“The LAZ executive is being criticised as a result of political battles and, as members, we are worried because they may have serious implications,” he said.
He said, “So it is inevitable for the members to sit down, find solutions to this issue so that sanity could prevails in the association.”
“We don’t want to see the image of the association being tarnished just because some individuals are involved in partisan politics,” Mr Kabwe said.
