Mighty resurrect, shock Nkana
‘MIGHTY’ Mufulira Wanderers reigned supreme and won the bragging rights as they silenced Nkana 3-2 to pick their first win of the Super Division season.
When the two sides meet in arguably Copperbelt’s biggest derby, their thirst is beyond the three points; it’s also about reputation and dominance.
Coach Beston Chambeshi watched in disbelief as Ghanaian Kwame Attram scored the winner at the death at Nkana Stadium in a week three encounter.
But coach Elijah Chikwanda was all smiles as the win secured his job which was on the brink.
Wanderers took the lead as early as the sixth minute through Davies Kamanga.
Obed Masumbuko equalised just after the start of the second half before Idris Mbombo put Nkana in the lead with a powerful header to register his fourth goal of the season.
But the lead was short lived as Attram restored the parity through a penalty in the 52nd minute
With the game looking to end in a draw, Attram dribbled past Nkana’s defenders from the right flank and released a long-range shot sending Allan Chibwe in the wrong direction on 90th minute.
This sent Wanderers fans into wild celebration while Nkana’s faithful watched with downcast faces as they lost the bragging rights.
The game was, however, marred by indiscipline among the Wanderers players, who engaged in childish match-delaying antics.
The referee showed his displeasure by flashing a red card at Kapambwe Musonda and a yellow card for goal minder Joshua Manyongo.
It took several other players to persuade an uncompromising Musonda to walk off the pitch.
The result left Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi swallowing his words after bragging about his team’s superiority before the match.
A distraught Chambeshi grumbled during the postmatch interview that his players had not performed to his expectation.
In Lusaka, Napsa Stars edged Lusaka Dynamos 1-0 thanks to a 45th minute goal from Thomas Banda.
Napsa are second on the table with nine points, behind Zesco United on goal difference, while Nkana are fourth with six points.
Wanderers and Lusaka Dynamos are tied on three points but the legendary cup fighters are better placed on 12th position.
