Ndola inmate ghts drug abuse in schools
A ZAMBIAN artiste, who is serving jail time at Kansenshi correctional facility in Ndola, has come up with a project aimed at educating youths on crime and drug abuse.
Mulenga Katongo, popularly known as Nice M, has dubbed the project, ‘Nice M Mission Against Crime Among Youths in Zambia (NMCYZ).
The project is aimed at changing the mind-set of youths to reduce the escalating levels of crime and drug abuse.
Katongo stated that he was going around schools in Ndola, sharing information about the importance of being productive and innovative in the society.
He was speaking yesterday during an educational talk on drug abuse and crime at Kansenshi Secondary School of Excellence.
The 33-year-old inmate is serving a five-year sentence at Kansenshi correctional facility after being incarcerated in 2016 for theft.
Katongo said that during his time in jail he had discovered that a lot of inmates serving in correctional facilities had less information about the consequences of committing a crime.
“I’m sharing this information with young people to avoid crime and drug abuse so that they do not end up in jail like I did,” he said.
He added that fighting crime and drug abuse should not be left to the government alone but that various stakeholders should come on board and help curb the vices.
Katongo said the response from the youth especially the pupils in schools had been overwhelming and he was hopeful that the knowledge been shared was being put to good use.
