BISHOPS WARN UPND OVER HOMOSEXUALITY

- By SILUMESI MALUMO

UPND will be a cursed party for supporting homosexuality, the Bishops Council of Zambia (BCZ) has said. BCZ secretary general Abel Kaela said the UPND leadership and the entire membership would gain nothing from promoting ungodly things.

The clergyman, in an interview yesterday, said if the UPND was given a chance to govern, then the country would be cursed because the political party in question supported evil activities.

In 2016 Africa Liberal Network (ALN) coordinator Nangamso Kwinana confirmed that all members support rights of lesbians, gay, bisexual, transgender and other sexual minorities. Ms Kwinana said Africa’s

“On biblical point of view, the bible is very clear that anyone in such programmes does not know God. God is always annoyed with people involved in such and to say the truth this will bring a curse upon the nation.

largest political affiliation members such as the United Party for National Development (UPND) and Democratic Alliance of South Africa (DA) support LGBTQ rights as human rights.

She said the UPND, among other affiliates, rejected violence against LGBTQ communities.

But Bishop Kaela said it was unfortunate the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema was claiming to be a Christian yet was in support of ungodly things.

“On biblical point of view, the bible is very clear that anyone in such programmes does not know God. God is always annoyed with people involved in such and to say the truth this will bring a curse upon the nation.

“It is unfortunate that people are turning away from God and engaging in immorality. And My prayer is that let this people turn away from such and embrace Christianity,” Bishop Kaela said. And Government Deputy Chief Whip Tutwa, Ngulube in a separate interview, said UPND membership to ALN was a threat to the unity and morals that the country had been fostering since independence.

He also said the UPND must not deceive Zambians by denying support for gay rights because liberal rights were criminalised in Zambia.

Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) president Andrew Ntewewe at press briefing yesterday, said the UPND leadership should not fool Zambians by claiming not to support homosexuality when they were part of the ALN which collectively support homosexuality.

He said promotion of homosexuality, under the veil of minority rights, was one of the core agenda constituting the ALN’s Liberal manifesto for Africa.
