Nab City Market ‘Kachasu’ traders

- By KALOBWE BWALYA

LUSAKA City Council (LCC) should arrest people selling kachasu, a locally distilled illicit spirit, at usaka’s City market.

In an interview, a resident, Shadrick Mubanga, noted that some drivers and conductors were getting intoxicated as early as 07: 00 hours from the illicit alcohol.

Mr Mubanga observed that each time he boarded a bus from City Market, to Lilanda, some drivers and conductors smelt alcohol.

He said he saw drivers and conductors carrying what they purported where water bottles, but in fact contained Kachasu. Mr Mubanga said he was worried as lives of commuters were at risk because drivers were always drunk.

He called on the law enforcement agencies to take quick action and ensure drunk drivers were cornered to protect people’s lives.

He said also said it was sad that some drunken drivers and conductors failed to reason with commuters and ended up insulting them.

Another citizen Bernard Mutambo, a trader at city market, said despite various complaints, not much was being done to arrest this situation.

Mr Mutambo said selling Kachasu in markets was common at City Market the council had reportedly failed to clamp down on the culprits. He cited City Market as one of the leading markets in terms of selling of the illicit spirits, among other prohibited drinks.

“Selling of Kachasu at City market has been going on for a long time, and despite reporting the matter no action has been taken,” said Mr Mutambo.
