Emulate Sata and put Zambia first - Lungu

- By SILUMESI MALUMO

PRESIDENT Michael Sata’s political life is a great lesson to all would be politicians because he always put Zambia first, President Edgar Lungu has said.

Mr Lungu said those who consider themselves worthy political students of former president would do well to emulate him.

President Lungu was speaking at St Ignatius yesterday during a memorial service for late president Michael Sata, who also founded the Patriotic Front.

“On another level, President Michael Sata’s political life was also a great lesson to all would-be politicians. He hated losing, but never let political setbacks, bruised emotions and injured virtue get the better of him. He always put Zambia first and lived to fight another day. Eventually, he would almost always win. “Those of us who consider ourselves worthy political students of this man will do well to emulate him,” President Lungu said. “He was a democrat through and through, and above all, a patriot. He was at home in any place in Zambia, encouraging all of us to be proud of who we are and proud of our country, Zambia,” President Lungu said.

President Sata wanted a Zambia that was united, a Zambia that was food secure, a Zambia that was clean, green and beautiful, Mr Lungu said, to honour his memory, there was need for all take part to make the country great, beautiful and prosperous.

And President Lungu said the country and the Patriotic Front lost a unifier, charismatic, courageous and rare breed of a politician.

He said President Sata wanted a better Zambia and improve the welfare that of the poor people.

Mr Lungu said the former president loved to prove doomsayers wrong and loved to make a difference in people’s lives. “He wanted a better world for all of us. He was a man on a mission. And, yes, he was an impatient man. He wanted things done yesterday. That sense of urgency is what fired him up, because president Sata loved to be challenged,” he said
