PILING GARBAGE WORRIES RESIDENTS

- By ENOCK KADEMAUNGA

SOME Lusaka resident have appealed to the Lusaka City Council (LCC) and its agents to timely collect garbage to avoid piling of solid waste in communities.

They expressed concern after noticing the over-pilling of garbage at designated disposal sites and other places.

The residents said the uncollected garbage had become a health hazard to children and the community at large as it was a breeding ground for various diseases.

Mark Muchindu of Kabwata Site and Service said the rate at which most clubs and restaurants were generating garbage was not proportional to the collection time table.

He asked the local authority to revise the collection timetable to avoid pilling of dirt.

Mr Muchindu said garbage beans were usually filled to capacity long before the collection day causing the garbage to accumulate and produce bad smells and attracting swarms of flies.

He called on the LCC to send a clear warning to bar owners who indiscriminately dispose of glass bottles that they would face consequences.

Mr Muchindu said perpetrators should be seen facing the law to curb the vice. “I believe things would change if the community is seeing offenders being prosecuted. However, civic leaders should continue championing the Keep Zambia Clean campaign and remind each one of their responsibility,” he said. Olister Mwanza of Kalingalinga expressed sadness over the uncollected waste in various parts of the compound.

She said money was being collected but the inconsistency from LCC and its contractors resulted in a looming break out of disease.

Ms Mwanza urged the relevant authorities to expedite the cleaning because the rains were almost here.

“The rains are starting soon and we can still see blocked drainages from last year, garbage is not collected on time. This endangers the health of children and may cause diseases in the community,” she said.
