Katele challenges HH

- By SILUMESI MALUMO

HAKAINDE Hichilema has once again been challenged to clear his name in the alleged sale of part of the Lower Zambezi National Park to a company in which he is a director.

Former Finance minister Katele Kalumba has joined calls for the UPND president to explain his role in the controversial mining project that has gripped the nation and other neighboring countries.

Dr Kalumba said the United Party for National Development (UPND) leader had been aligned to Zambezi Resource Limited, as a director, therefore needed to clear his name.

He said directors are the ones involved in transactions and so it is important that he comes out clean.

He was speaking in an clusive interview with Daily Nation yesterday.

Dr Kalumba wondered why the said Zambezi Resources could engage in such a transaction which had a negative impact on the wildlife, natural resources and water bodies.

Dr Kalumba, who served as a minister in former president Frederick Chiluba's government, said such an act was uncalled for and that persons involved in such activities were a danger to the nation.

Eastern Province Minister Makebi Zulu recently challenged Mr Hichilema to explain his role in the alleged sale of the Lower Zambezi National Park.

Mr Zulu challenged opposition leader to tell exthe the the nation the truth over the matter.

But Mr Hichilema, during a radio programme failed to clarify the matter and instead only threatened to sue Mr Zulu for accusing him of selling a stake in the national park.

Mr Hichilema threatened that if Mr Zulu continued accusing him of involvement in the matter, he would ensure he “finished” him off.

But Dr Kalumba said it was prudent that Mr Hichilema cleared the air over the matter which he had been connected to.

Dr Kalumba said as someone vying for the high office in the land, Mr Hichilema needed to clear the air on the matter as Zambians wanted to know the truth.

He said Zambezi Resources was supposed to be in the forefront in protecting Zambia’s wildlife and natural resources instead of being only interested in money.

“That was really wrong, Zambezi Resource, particularly it's directors, went against the law,” Dr Kalumba said.
