Lungu donates 600 mealie meal bags to Ndola Central Constituency the
SIX HUNDRED bags of mealie meal have been donated to the residents of Twapia, Nkwazi and Chipulukusu Townships in Ndola to curb issues of hunger.
Ndola Central Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Mulenga, who is also Minister of Sport, Youth and Child Development donated 600 bags of 25 kilograms of mealie meal to the residents of Twapia, Nkwazi and Chipulukusu townships.
Speaking at Chibolele Primary School in Chipulukusu where the mealie meal was being distributed, he said the initiative was wholly sponsored by President Edgar Lungu who had noticed the issue of hunger in various parts of the country.
He said the poor harvest caused by poor rains during
2018-2019 farming season had caused the prices of mealie meal to increase, thus raising cases of hunger.
Mr Mulenga also noted that a lot of crops had been eaten by army worms in the 2018- 2019 farming season, thereby adversely affecting the yield of farmers.
He said 200 bags of mealie meal would be distributed each in Kanyala and Dag Hamershoid in his constituency, coming to a total of 1000 bags for all the five wards.
He said the government was aware of the challenges that the people in the country were facing and was therefore finding solutions to them.
He announced that more bags of mealie meal would be distributed to the residents during the first three months of 2020 as they would have other challenges to deal with such as school fees and focusing on taking care of their farms.
And in an interview, Ms Carol Phiri a resident of Nkwazi thanked government for sympathising with the residents who were at the grassroots level in society.
Ms Phiri said she was facing a great challenge in feeding her family as her husband had died eight years ago.
And Mr James Chola a resident of Chipulukusu said the gesture was commendable because many vulnerable households couldn’t afford to buy 25kg bags of the commodity.
