GIVE CHILUBA PROPERTY TO FAMILY, GOVT URGED

- By SILUMESI MALUMO

GOVERNMENT should take keen interest in former President Frederick Chiluba’s case so that his property can be returned because the court acquitted him, High Commissioner to Malawi Richard Kachingwe said.

And Major Kachingwe says there was need for Government to honour Dr Chiluba like it had been done to other former presidents because he had given service to the country.

It is shocking that even after the former president was acquitted by the courts of law, his property had not been given back, he said.

Maj Kachingwe said Cabinet must take keen interest in the matter because what was happening was unacceptable.

He said in an interview yesterday that what was happening was injustice, therefore, it should be addressed immediately. “Dr Chiluba was president of this country and he needed to be respected by everyone even when he is gone. We are not only supposed to respect our leaders when they are alive.

Does it mean that if Dr Chiluba was alive then his property should have been given back to him? That man was acquitted that means all charges levelled against him were no more and what was seized then should be given back.

“Those who were given responsibility to safeguard his property, why are they not coming forth and handover the property to the rightful owner. I think government through Cabinet office should take interest in this matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, Maj Kachingwe said the former president must be recognised and be honoured like any other former heads of states, Major Kachingwa said.

Also former UPND presidential advisor said Dr Chiluba brought democracy and multiparty which was enjoyed by many but his works were not recognised.

“Yes we differed with the former president on the third term and he listened to the people of Zambia but we have not seen much of being given respect which he deserved,” Maj Kachingwe said.
