Kambwili’s aide threatens lawyer
LUSAKA lawyer Jonas Zimba has reported former Roan member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili’s bodyguard to police for threatening violence against him.
This was after the bulky bodyguard, only identified as Chinga, threatened Mr. Zimba that “twalishiba eko wikala tukesa kuchena (we know where you live, we will come and injure you).”
Chinga threatened Mr. Zimba after the case in which Kambwili has been charged with defamation of President Edgar Lungu was adjourned on account that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader was sick.
Mr. Zimba, who is prosecuting the case, had objected to an application for an adjournment but after arguments from the prosecution and the defence the case was consequently adjourned.
As Mr. Zimba was about to leave the court premises Kambwili approached and started castigating him and co-prosecutor Emmanuel Bupe Mwansa, another private lawyer, for objecting to an application for an adjournment, which was made by defence lawyer Keith Mweemba.
“Iwe mwaiche Zimba ukachimona (You young man Zimba you will see),” Kambwili said.
Kambwili fumed at the prosecution team accusing them of wanting him to be jailed.
He said he was aware that the case was political and that it did not go through the Chief Resident Magistrate.
Later Chinga, who was accompanied by other NDC cadres, threatened Mr. Zimba with violence after which the latter went to Lusaka Central police station to report the matter.
And speaking in an interview after reporting the case to the criminal investigations department, Mr. Zimba said he will follow it up with the letter to the court to indicate what happened outside because there were utterances that were made against Lusaka Magistrate Felix Kaoma who is handling the defamation case.
“Every citizen ought not to be threatened in the manner that those gentlemen were trying to threaten me. I am just doing my job, I am simply a lawyer, I have been hired to execute a particular task.”
In this case, New Congress Party president Peter Chanda complained against Kambwili for accusing President Lungu and Lusaka businessman Valden Findlay of using the Presidential jet to courier drugs.
The case has been adjourned to February 5, 2020.
