UNZA given 2 days to pay salaries

- By SILUMESI MALUMO

UNIVERSITY of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union (UNZALARU) has given the UNZA management a 48-hour ultimatum to pay the 2019 and January 2020 salary arrears. UNZALARU general secretary Kelvin Mambwe said failure to do that the union would be left with no option but report the management to police for criminal liability.

He said in a statement yesterday, the members were now fed up with the monthly tradition template memorandum that always gives unclear information regarding the actual date for the payment of salaries.

“The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union is deeply concerned with the University of Zambia management’s lack of commitment to paying of salaries to its members on time.

The management should be aware that the failure to honour monthly obligations to our members does not only affect the normal daily lives of our members, but has an adverse effect on the quality of service rendered to our students and the nation at large. “Our members are now being forced to shift their focus away from knowledge generation and sharing to finding other means of sustaining their livelihood at the expense of providing a service.

Our members are slowly losing their global status of intellectuals due to management inept attitude,” he said.

Mr Mambwe said the inability to put in place lasting solutions to the financial challenges that the institution was facing was clear failure to its part.
