Govt saluted over road safety achievements
GOVERNMENT ’S achievements in road safety especially in curbing road accidents in the country are impressive, says Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) chairman Daniel Mwamba.
Mr Mwamba said ZRST was encouraged with the hard work put in by the government in recent months following the global ministerial road safety conference in Sweden.
He said the road safety grant of $450, 000 to the Zambian government by the UN for road safety during the Global Ministerial Conference was a recommendable achievement by both government and the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) efforts.
Mr Mwamba said the funding provided by the UN had the strong backing of the Zambia Road Safety Trust and looks forward to working with the Government to understand how it would be invested.
In complementing the government’s efforts on road safety, his organisation would together with Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa, launch the 30 km/h speed limit law and implementing signs in at least ten schools in Lusaka on March24, 2020.
He said ZRST was cognisant of the fact that Road Safety remained a national crisis, noting that about 130 people die on roads every month. “The Minister for Transport and Communications, Mutotwe L Kafwaya, should be commended for continuing to make road safety a priority and for showing national leadership on an issue that is so important to so many Zambian families.
“And as an agency, we shall continue to work closely together with government, to educate road users, improve safety infrastructure, support road safety legislation and try to save as many lives as we possibly can on Zambia’s roads,” he said.
