Dambwa residents cry for better roads

- By ANDREW MUKOMA

RESIDENTS in Dambwa North have called on the Livingstone City Council to quickly rehabilitate the roads and create drainage system in the area.

In the last few days, Livingstone has experienced heavy rain, resulting in some roads being washed away especially in Dambwa North and some parts of Nottie Broad.

Mr Lawrence Muleka told the Daily Nation that some roads from the main Botswana road were now impassable.

He explained that the heavy rain which the city was experiencing had caused damage on the roads in Dambwa North.

Mr Muleka, atrributed the problem to poor planning by the local authority.

He wondered what use the earth moving equipment which the City Council bought was performing when roads were getting eroded.

Another resident, Mr Junior Mweemba, challenged the council to start working on the roads and not to wait until the rainy season was over.

Mr Mweemba said that roads had been washed away and that residents were facing difficulties in driving in and out of their homes.

He said that for a very long time, residents in Dambwa North had been “crying” the loudest over the washed away road and lack of drainages. But Livingstone City

Council public relations manager, Melvin Mukela said, with the heavy downpour being experienced, it was difficult for the local authority to work on the roads.

Mr Mukela said the only time the local authority would be able to do so would be after the rainy season.

"We shall work on them after the rain season because if they are graded now, the following day they will be eroded again," he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Mukela has warned traders who have invaded Comesa Building and illegally trading there to stop.

He said that the area was not designated for a market and warned that the council would soon move in and remove the traders who were mainly women.
