STATE TO WEAN OFF UNZA, CBU
GOVERNMENT is working on a plan to wean off the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Copperbelt University so that they can become self-sustaining without any grants from the State, Minister of Higher Education Brian Mushimba has said.
And Dr Mushimba said councils for the two public universities would be dissolved because they had o tli ed their stay in office.
Dr Mushimba however said in an interview that UNZA and CBU would have to be innovative and think of how to raise funds to sustain their operations and pay salaries.
He said the two universities could not continue depending on Government grants when they had the capacity to be financially independent.
Dr Mushimba said the ministry was therefore working on a strategy aimed at ensuring that UNZA and were weaned off. e are already working on a strategy to ensure that UNZA and CBU are weaned off. hey cannot contin e depending on Government grants when they have the capacity to raise their funds through innovation for operations and staff salaries,” he said.
Dr Mushimba said it was unfortunate that some lecturers had resorted to insulting Government when there was a delay in disbursing rants.
Meanwhile, Dr Mushimba said UNZA and CBU councils would be dissolved to pave way for fresh ideas. e said the e istin co ncils at the two universities had overstayed in office and that there was need for new leadership.
