CANNED FISH SEIZED IN LIVINGSTONE

- By ANDREW MUKOMA

THE Livingstone City Council has seized 165 caned fish worth about K4, 500 from the two Shoprite Supermarket in the tourist capital following reports of alleged deficiency in canning pieces.

Council Public Relations Officer, Mumba Mafwenko, confirmed the seizure to the Daily Nation yesterday.

Ms Mafwenko said the seized tinned fish which included 400 grammes and 250 grammes tins was manufactured last year by West Point Processors, a South African Company based in Cape Town. She said the local authority moved in and ordered the removal from the shelves.

Ms Mafwenko said that Ministry of Health and Wellness South Africa recalled all the pilchards products with batch code numbers ZST29 and ZSC29.

She said that the affected brands included Shoprtite Ritebrand, Cape Point, West Point, OK House brand, Prime Ocean, Checkers House brend, Sunny, Deep Catch, Mommas, Spot and Saldabha.

“The local authority however would send the samples of the seized tinned fish to Lusaka for laboratory tests to ensure they were safe for public consumption and also for quality assurance," she said.

Ms Mafwenko appealed to consumers to be alert and contact the council should they come across any tinned fish bearing the batch codes as the products are unfit for human consumption.

"We advise shop owners who have not been inspected yet to remove the canned fish from their shelves in order to protect consumers," she said.
