Police chief revokes 15 firearms licences
INSPECTOR General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has revoked 15 firearm licences as a result of misuse by the owners under various circumstances.
Zambia Police public Relations officer Esther Mwata Katongo said among the seized firearms are those for Maxwell Kyamba of Chingola Copperbelt popularly known as Tablet H. He is in police custody in relation to matters that are still being investigated by Police.
Ms Katongo said that according to firearm regulations, when a firearm acquired for a good cause is being misused; the firearm licence can be revoked.
She said that some of the circumstances that lead to revocation of gun licenses include exposing or brandishing of the firearm in public.
Ms Katongo cautioned that even when carrying guns , they ought to be properly concealed.
She said that when conducting a shooting practice, this should be at a properly constructed range to avoid accidents. " As Police, one of our mandates is to regulate acquisition and usage of firearms. We wish to inform the public that the Inspector General of Police has revoked 15 firearm licences as a result of misuse by the owners under various circumstances," she said.
And Ms Katongo said the police would continue with the exercise as it believed there were still other people who were fond of misusing their firearms."We appeal to members of the public who may know any person in the habit of mishandling their firearms to report to any nearest police," Ms Katongo said.
