MP applauds women’s attainment­s

GOVERNMENT says it attaches great importance to women developmen­t as it helps eliminate various social hurdles and enhancemen­t of living standards of rural communitie­s.

Msanzala Member of Parliament, Peter Daka said this when he officiated at the Internatio­nal Women’s day commemorat­ions in Msanzala Constituen­cy in Petauke.

Mr. Daka said the Constituti­on recognises the principles of gender equality and non- discrimina­tion as fundamenta­l rights.

Mr. Daka highlighte­d the successes and achievemen­ts of women in the country as they are holding the highest positions in the administra­tion such as from being secretarie­s to directors.

He addedthat for empowering women politicall­y, government had taken measures like increasing seats for women in Parliament , while others were now engaged in challengin­g profession­s like pilots, members of armed forces and law enforcemen­t agencies to mention by a few. Mr Daka observed that incidences of exploitati­on and domestic abuses have gone down substantia­lly, following the developmen­t in women empowermen­t.

Mr. Daka however said men should not be hindrance for women to take up leadership positions adding that, mutual understand­ing between men and women was the only partnershi­p that could bring developmen­t in their communitie­s.

He advised men and women to take up a responsibi­lity of teaching their children good morals and habits of care giving when they are young, so that they grow with it to become good leaders in society.

He also urged women to stop the culture of waiting for white collar jobs but instead get involved in skills training through various skills centres that have been put in place by government for self sustainabi­lity.
