Uncollected garbage worries councillor

- By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

A CIVIC leader in Kalumbila has advised Solwezi Municipal Council to manage well the Kipemba dump site to avoid the outbreak of diseases.

Kibanza ward councillor, Geoffrey Munene, told the Daily Nation in an interview that the municipality had mismanaged the dump site.

He noted that the site had become filthy and was compromising the environment.

Mr Munene said the refuse collectors were dumping waste anyhow, causing the garbage to accumulate near the road and the nearby communities.

“When you reach Kibemba area as you drive along the Solwezi-Mutanda road, there is a lot of waste flying all over. This for me is a big danger not only to the communities but also to drivers. Therefore, I would to appeal to the council in Solwezi to manage the dump site properly,” Mr Munene said.

He said if left unchecked, the situation could result in an outbreak of diseases in the nearby communities such as Kipemba and Kyansununu.

“It is therefore imperative that the local authority moves in to control the situation,” he added.

And when contacted for a comment. Solwezi Municipal Council Public Health Director, Stanley Mbewe, said the local authority would meet all companies engaged to collect garbage.

“The concern by the Kibanza ward councillor of Kalumbila where the dump site is located is very genuine. However, I would like to assure the communities that we taking all the necessary measures to ensure that we control the situation,” he said.

Mr Mbewe attributed the situation to the breakdown of a bulldozer that was specifically allocated to the site.

“However, we have hired another machine that is going to clear all the waste,” he said.
