Hospital mother’s shelter gets ablution block

- By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

SIGNATE Quarries Limited in Solwezi has constructed an ablution block for mother’s shelter at Solwezi General Hospital.

The piece of infrastructure has been constructed at a cost of K200,000.

Signate Quarries general manager, Oswald Machuta, said his company decided to plough back to the community where it operated by constructing an ablution block.

He was speaking during the handover of the facility.

“We realised we needed to plough back to this community, and the only way we could do that is by putting up this small piece of infrastructure here for our mothers who look after patients in the hospital,” he said.

Mr Machuta said his firm would remain committed to serving the community while conducitng business in a sustainable manner.

And North-western province deputy permanent Secretary, Douglas Ngimbu, said the facility had come at a time when Government was upscaling levels on hygiene in wake of the COVID-19.

He said that the mother’s shelter had been running without an ablution block for some time now.

Mr Ngimbu said to some extent, mothers used to use the nearby bush to relieve themselves and that such a situation was not proper for women.

“But with the construction of this facility, I believe the challenges our mothers have been going through will be a thing of the past,” he said.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary challenged hospital management to guard the piece of infrastructure jealously.

Meanwhile, Solwezi General Hospital acting medical superintendent Dr Davis Saasa expressed gratitude for the gesture.
