Fwayo resurfaces as Matero coach

ZAMBIAN former internatio­nal striker Fwayo Tembo has been appointed guest coach for Lusaka Province Division Three side Matero United.

Matero United Football Club proprietor, who is also Lusaka Mayor, Miles Sampa said Fwayo signed a one-month contract worth K5, 000.

“We have hired Fwayo Tembo on a one-month contract as guest coach for Matero United FC.

“The contract is worth K5, 000 and meant for a win-win situation for both Matero United and Fwayo as he awaits reopening of the league in Azerbaijan where he trades his skills,” Sampa posted on Facebook.

But in an interview, Sampa said Fwayo was coming on board because he was an experience­d player who would boost the team’s morale.

He said the ambitious young players can learn lessons from the striker who has had both success and short-comings.

Asked on when the guest coach would start his new job since the league was suspended due to coronaviru­s, Sampa said it was immediate as the players still needed to keep fit during this trying time.

“He is coming to bring morale to the team. I met the players the other day and their ambitions is to play for the national team and for bigger clubs, so he is the right person as he played for bigger clubs locally and abroad like in Israel, Romania. He has been around so he is exposed.” Fwayo, 31, has been off the pitch since 2018 when he left Lusaka Dynamos. He has played for Romanian side Astra Giurgiu, Hapoel Ra’anana, Tunisian side Étoile Sahel and Power Dynamos.

Matero are 15th on the log with 13 points from 22 games played before the suspension of the league.
