Covid-19 cancels Larfarge Marathon
THE Zambia Athletes has cancelled the 7th edition of the Lafarge Lusaka Marathon (LLM) which was scheduled for September, 26 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to a joint statement issued by Lafarge Zambia Chief Executive Officer Jimmy Khan, and Zambia Athletics formerly called Zambia Amateur Athletics Association led by Elias Mpondela, the marathon has been cancelled after a review of the trend and guidance of health experts and the provisions of SI 21 & 22 of 2020 on Covid-19.
Khan said the decision to cancel the marathon was made following the guidance of the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation on the status of Covid-19.
He said the health and safety of the participants and partners was of paramount importance to Lafarge Zambia as the main sponsors of the Lusaka marathon.
“At Lafarge Zambia, health and safety is our core value thus the safety of our nation participants and partners is of paramount importance to us that is why management reached at the deficulty decision to cancel the 7th edition of the marathon this year,” Khan said.
Meanwhile, Mpondela who is LLM chairman encouraged participants to continue training and keep fit in the new normal to prepare for the 2021 edition.
Mpondela also advised paid up participants to push their registration fee to next year or request for a refund.
“We have hope and believe that this will pass and we will be able to cement our fitness together next year,” said
