Lungu promises to ‘power’ up the nation
GOVERNMENT aims to connect the whole country to the national grid because electricity is key to economic development, President Edgar Lungu has said.
President Lungu said Government would ensure that all parts of the country received adequate development for the betterment of the people.
Speaking when he inspected some projects in Luangwa, President Lungu said government would ensure that the entire country was on the national grid so that economic activities flourish.
President Lungu told Journalists after touring the Luangwa Zesco 33kv power station yesterday that electricity was the source of economic activities which needed to be prioritised.
"I tend to think that energy is the source of activity but again we can not talk about energy without other development such as infrastructure, so overall we are saying that development will be taken to all areas so that people can feel at home," President Lungu said.
President Lungu said he was pleased that the Luangwa 33kv power station was able to supply electricity to Nsumbu district in Mozambique.
Mr Lungu said this development would enhance economic development as revenue would be realised.
Meanwhile Zesco Managing Director Victor Mundende informed the Head of
State that the power station was supplying Nsumbu district in Mozambique and it was on the verge of starting supplying to Kanyembo district in Zimbabwe.
Mr Mundende said Zambabwean authorities had applied for the deal and Zesco would soon respond to the matter.
He however said that the completion of the 33kv power station was a relief to the power utility company as it was costly to supply power using thermal.
Mr Mundende said the utility was spending huge sums of money to supply power to the community.
And speaking during a meeting with Chief Mburuma and Chief Mphuka, the Head of State assured the people of Luangwa that government would ensure animal, human conflict was stopped.
Meanwhile, Chief Mburuma praised the Head of State for considering the people of Luangwa by taking development there.
The traditional leader said President Lungu's leadership was exemplary and people of the area appreciated what he was doing for them.
