ROTARY JOINS COVID-19 FIGHT
AS the Covid-19 pandemic numbers soar, the Rotary club in Livingstone is becoming innovative and showing that there are ways to help.
Mosi-oa-tunya Rotary District 9210 of Livingstone donated 600 washable face masks, 10 hand washing buckets, 750 books and pencils, 24 hand washing soap all valued at K 11,650.
The benefiting schools were Ngwenya Primary School and Linda Primary School for vulnerable children.
Club president Rodney Sikumba said for more than 110 years, Rotary clubs have bridged cultures and connected continents to champion peace and fought illiteracy and poverty.
He added that the Rotary had been promoting the provision of clean water and sanitation and also fought disease, hence the involvement in the COVID-19 prevention.
Mr Sikumba said on fighting disease, Rotary had been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years and that its main goal of ridding the world of the disease was closer than ever.
“Amidst this difficult time, we have a duty to protect ourselves and others around us. As the Rotary Club of Mosi- o-Tunya Livingstone, we strongly believe that every effort towards curbing the challenges that come with coronavirus
(Covid-19) is highly commendable,” he said.
He said it was for that reason that the Rotary found it prudent to donate Covid-19 preventive materials to two community schools in Livingstone.
“We encourage all Livingstone residents and Zambians as a whole, to adhere to the World Health Organisation and Ministry of Health (MoH) guidelines of social distancing, staying and home,
and wearing of face masks should you venture out,” he said.
And Ngwenya Primary School head- teacher Chester Mufalali thanked the club for the gesture.
Mr Mufalali said that the donated items will go a long way in meeting the needs of the learners especially that most of them come from vulnerable families that had challenges in providing for the children.
