UPND cadre nabbed over Mufulira assault

A SUSPECT has been arrested in Mufulira in connection with the alleged assault of Patriotic Front (PF) cadres, which occurred last week.

UPND cadres descended on PF members near Mafken radio station where their party president, Mr Hakainde Hichilema was featuring on a programme.

Police examined the video which went viral, of some PF cadres being pummelled by UPND members, who had gathered outside the radio station. Copperbelt Commission­er of Police, Charity Katanga, confirmed the arrest and identified the suspect as Peter Kashimoto of house number G72 Kawama West, Mufulira.

Ms Katanga said Kashimoto was captured in a video and that police were still on the ground to get more details which could lead to more arrests.

She could not state whether the suspect was a UPND cadre or not, but stated that he had been charged with assault occasionin­g bodily harm. During the fracas, three PF cadres were injured while a house of a former UPND member who recently defected to PF was damaged.

In the ensuing confusion, some shops were forced to close for fear that people could take advantage to loot.
