Chilombo waves red flag over ZA polls

- By MUKWIMA CHILALA

SOME members of the Zambia Athletics (ZA) have appealed to the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) to take an interest in the association’s election slated for this year and ensure that the constitution was followed.

In a letter addressed to the NSCZ chairperson Patrick Mutimushi and accessed by the Nation Sport, Young Mokola Athletics club secretary Misheck Chilombo has expressed concern that the Zambia Athletics executive intends to postpone the elections from October 1 to an unknown date which was against the association’s constitution.

Chilombo said that moving the date from October was not only unconstitutional but against the rights of the members of the association who wished to participate in the competition.

He also noted that the ZA executive committee had been misleading the public by alleging that the athletics body was established under an Act of Parliamen.

Chilombo since appealed to Mutimushi to ensure that the ZA constitution was followed and that elections were held in the first week of October 2020 and not beyond.

“On behalf of Young Mokola Athletic Club , I would to inform you that the current term Zambia Athletics executive committee was elected on October 1, 2016 and its term ends on October 1, 2020 in line with article 10.6 (g) of the ZA constitution. Our worry is that the executive committee is trying to shift the election date from October 2020 to unknown month which is unconstitutional and human rights abuse on individuals wishing to participate in the elections,” the letter read.

But ZA General Secretary Davison Mung’ambata said the association would only announce the election date at an appropriate time.

Mung’ambata refused to be dragged into issues raised by Chilombo saying that they were bent on just bringing confusion into the sport.
