‘RETIRED GOVT WORKERS MUST VACATE INSTITUTIONAL HOUSES’

- By ANDREW MUKOMA

ALL retired civil servants and council workers who are still occupying Government houses must vacate the units, Southern Province Minister Edify Hamukale has directed.

Dr Hamukale said Government was facing challenges accommodating new officers because retirees were still occupying institutional houses despite being paid.

The minister cited former Livingstone District Commissioner, Omar Munsanje, who was still occupying a Government house.

He said that Mr Munsanje was paid but wondered why he was still staying in a Government house.

He was speaking when he addressed heads of government departments.

Dr Hamukale said, going forward, he will not allow that because it is a challenge to the government.

The minister called directed office of the District Commissioner to work with the department of works and supply and compile a list of all former government employees who were still holding to houses, despite receiving all their dues from the Ministry of Finance.

“We are having a lot of difficulties in accommodating new comers because some of the retired council employees and main stream civil servants are still staying in state owned houses which they should vacate,” Dr Hamukale said.

Dr Hamukale said all of them should vacate the houses so that new officers could be settled. “For those who have been paid their retirement packages, repatriation and other dues, they should vacate public houses as soon as possible.

“I am so disappointed...sorry to mention that Mr Omar Munsanje is one such a case. The house where he lives is supposed to offer services to the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA). He was paid repatriation but he is not leaving,” the minister said.
