must be patriotic and should not misinform people for political expediency. The Bank of Zambia cannot risk the country's economy by printing money, former Minister of Finance Katele Kalumba has said. Dr Kalumba said the central bank cannot engage in any activities that can danger the economic situation of the country. He was reacting to statement by Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane, a former minister of finance when featured on Millenium Radio yesterday and claimed that the BoZ was printing to loan out Government, Dr Kalumba said in an interview yesterday, the institution could not take a risky path knowing very well the effects of inflation. I urge Dr Musokotwane to be patriotic, he said, he should not alarm the country with the information he knows was not true. Dr Kalumba said “Dr Musokotwane knows the functions of the Bank of Zambia, it is important he stops issuing false statements for political gain, that is dangerous. The former minister said Dr Musokotwane was a seasoned economist and he knew how the economy works and he should be able to give the nation correct information. He said it was wrong for Dr Musokotwane to fall in a trap of politicians who were in the habit of misleading the nation. “Let’s not disinform the nation for political convenience, Dr Musokotwane knows well, what the Bank of Zambia can do and what it cannot. “I urge him to speak for Zambia and work for Zambia instead of trying to mislead the people out there. This country is ours and let’s do what is correct which can benefit the country,” Dr Kalumba said. He said politicians must always be eager to do things in the interest of the people.
