Govt invests $100m in Luanshya water project

- By OLIVER SAMBOKO

GOVERNMENT has spent over $100 million on a water and sanitation project in Luanshya aimed at improving service delivery, Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Development Minister, Jonas Chanda has disclosed.

Dr Chanda said Government was committed to improving the provision of water and sanitation to all citizens. He said to achieve this goal, the Government invested $104 million in new water and sanitation infrastructure in Luanshya to address water shortages and sanitation services. He was speaking when he toured Makoma Water Treatment plant and sewerage ponds in the company of Luanshya Mayor, Nathan Chanda and Roan Member of Parliament (MP) Joseph Chishala. Dr Chanda said Government had installed six new water pumps at Makoma water treatment plant which had improved water supply to most townships. The minister said the investment was going to result in an additional 10,000 cubic metres of water which was currently at 45,000 cubic meters of clean water per day. He said the completion of the ongoing $450 million Kafulafuta Water Supply System Project would greatly help in provision of clean water to the residents. Luanshya currently receives 35, 000 cubic meters of water from Makoma Treatment Plant while 10, 000 cubic meters is pumped from Mikomfwa Treatment Plant. He said water shortage was as a result of old leaking water pipes installed in the 1920s.
