DELAYED PAYMENTS IRK FORMER NDOLA LIME WORKERS
delay in the release of terminal benefits for the workers at Ndola Lime Company has left them agitated and worried, says the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW).
NUMAW National Treasurer, Saul Simujika, said the delayto to pay workers their terminal benefits had caused a lot of worry and agitation at the plant.
In an interview, Mr Simujika indicated that the workers were supposed to be paid their terminal benefits by August 7, this year.
He said due to administrative issues, management had written to the workers that it had extended to deadline to August 31, as the receiving date.
Mr Simujika said the extension did not sit well with the union members as they had already made plans to receive their terminal benefits earlier.
He said NYMAW had already engaged the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mine (ZCCM-IH) through their representative Mr Milingo Lungu to immediately pay the former employees.
He said indications were that there was supposed to be a consent order signed by the High Court because the running of Ndola Lime under administration was born out of a court issue.
Mr Simujika said that due to that, all issues were supposed to be done by the court adding that the case had been relocated to Mongu, causing the delay.
He also urged the people involved in making the payments to speed up the process as the union did not wish to see a situation where people became unruly.
