JAY JAY TAKEN ILL, HOSPITALISED
SUSPENDED Eastern Province youth chairperson, Emmanuel Banda has been admitted at Chipata General Hospital after failing sick while in remand at Namuseche correctional facility.
Mr Banda, popularly known as Jay Jay has been in custody since his arrest last week for unlawful procession, and was on Wednesday transferred from Chipata Central Police to Namuseche prison.
According to Jay Jay’s father Mr William Banda, his son was Wednesday night taken to the hospital around 18:30 hours where he was admitted after he experienced chest pains.
“Yes, he is admitted to Chipata General Hospital after he experienced chest pains while in prison. He was rushed to the hospital around 18:30 hours on Wednesday night,” Mr Banda said.
Mr Banda who is Lusangazi council chairperson, however said his son’s condition was stable.
On Wednesday, Eastern Province Commissioner of Police, Lackson Sakala, told the Daily Nation that Mr Banda was transferred to Namuseche Correctional facility awaiting court appearance this week.
And Some PF members have reportedly camped at Chipata Magistrate’s Court waiting for Mr Banda to appear before the court.
Last Thursday, Mr Banda who had the previous day been bonded at Lusaka Central Police Station for aggravated assault with intent to steal, proceeded to Chipata where he allegedly staged an unlawful assembly and procession against provisions of the Public Order Act.
Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja then directed Eastern Province Police command to arrest Mr Banda as he had not notified the police.
And Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) leader Sean Tembo said the continued incarceration of PF Eastern Province youth chairman Jay Jay Banda without availing him before court is pure injustice on the part of the Police.
Mr Tembo said PeP was disappointed with the decision by the Zambia Police to continue detaining Mr Banda without according him Police Bond or taking him to court.
He said the Police should take the suspended youth Chairperson to court so that he can have an opportunity to apply for bail since the Police were not willing to give him bond.
Mr Tembo said the tendency by the Zambia Police to detain suspects and refuse to grant them bond, while at the same time fail to take them to court mounts to extra-judicial punishment and should be stopped.
“To begin with the charge of unlawful assembly which the police slapped on Mr Banda does not even exist in any of the statute books as it was repealed from the Public Order Act a long time ago,” he said.
He said every citizen has an inalienable right to fair treatment by our law enforcement agencies.
Mr Tembo also demanded that the Inspector General of Police Mr Kakoma Kanganja, who issued the instruction to have Mr Banda arrested, should immediately release him on Police Bond, or at the least take him to court.
