Power plant planned for Chunga dumpsite

- By SILUMESI MALUMO

AN American energy company, Ivory Energy has expressed interest to set up a power plant at Chunga dumpsite in Lusaka at cost of US$2.2 million.

National Congress Party president, Peter Chanda, who had engaged the investor said the company intends to generate power from the waste at the dump site.

Pastor Chanda said the plant would generate about 50 megawatts of power, stating this would be another measure to cushion the energy challenges in the country.

He said in an interview yesterday that the investor was more than ready to start the process of setting up the power plant.

Pastor Chanda said the only issue delaying the entire process was the approval by the Lusaka City Council.

Pastor Chanda said everything was in place to ensure that the project kicked off but that the council was taking time to finalise the paper work.

“As a party we have been advocating for green energy and we tried our best to engage Ivory Energy so that a power plant can be set up in order to start generating power from the waste materials.

The investor did accept and they resolved that they put up a power plant at a cost US$2.2 million. As a party we have done everything together with investor but the only process remaining is for the council to finalise the paper work. All in all everything is in place as things stand.

“So our request is that let the council expedite the process so that the investor can come in the country and begin the project,” he said.

Pastor Chanda indicated the party would ensure it engaged in issues that benefited the country.

He said the opposition was not there to criticise the Government but they should take part in developing the country.

The opposition leader said the project once actualised it would not only play a role to cushion the power deficit but would also create jobs for many people.
