Initiative to promote disabled persons unveiled
MORE than 800 people in Kazungula and Livingstone have been trained to identify the person with disabilities and look into their interests.
The training has been channelled through the Norwegian Association of Disabled (NAD).
NAD Zambia Programme Manager, Eddie Mupotola said his organisation had conducted training in the two districts and developed manuals and modules which were being used in the programme.
Mr Mutopola was speaking during the opening of a workshop on human rights and COVID 19 for persons with disabilities in Livingstone.
Meanwhile, Disability Rights Watch director, Wamundila Waliuya, paid tribute to Government for the promotion of the rights of the people with disabilities.
Mr Waliuya said the Government had demonstrated inclusiveness in dealing with persons living with disabilities.
And the media has been urged to promote the rights of persons with disabilities by telling positive stories about their lives.
Livingstone District Commissioner, Pascalina Musokotwane, said the media has a critical role to play in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities.
The media, she said has a role to play in championing the welfare and well-being of people with disabilities.
“The coming of Covid-19 in
Zambia has complicated the lives of many people especially those with disabilities and it has changed the way we all programme our activities,” Ms Musokotwane said.
She said it was therefore important to interrogate the impact of COVID-19 on the employment of human right.
She said stakeholders such as the media should take interest in playing their role in realising the rights of persons with disabilities.
