Allow soccer fans at Stadia

- MAINALA ZULU, Lusaka.

Dear Editor,

THE MTN/FAZ Super Division returns to action today with defending champions Nkana beginning their title defence with a match against Forest Rangers at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

In Lusaka, one of the big fixtures will see NAPSA Stars hosting Zesco United as Green Buffaloes play Red Arrows in a Lusaka derby.

Unfortunately the passionate fans for these clubs will be compelled to follow the games from their TV sets at their various homes because the games are being played behind closed doors due to the health protocol restrictions.

However, with teams playing their matches behind closed doors, clubs will not be able to make money which is very unfortunate because almost all clubs survive on the income generated from gate takings.

It is also important to note that not all games are televised live on pay TV which accommodates about four games every weekend.

Soccer fans were barred at Stadia to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic but with the numbers of Covid-19 diminishing in Zambia, it is only natural that clubs are given the opportunity to raise funds from gate takings to survive provided they are given strict health guidelines to follow.

Very soon the national team will engage in crucial AFCON qualifiers against Botswana which will require the 12th player support for the team to be motivated to deliver a positive result for the country hence the need for soccer fans to be allowed at stadia.

If musicians have been allowed to hold musical shows like the Kopala experience held last night at Woodlands Stadium which accommodated hundreds of music lovers, if politicians are allowed to hold political rallies which attracts thousands of followers, it is only fair that soccer fans are allowed at stadia to be able to enjoy the beautiful games live.
