UBA intent on promoting reading culture
IN an effort to rekindle the dwindling reading culture among African youths, the United Bank Africa (UBA) Zambia has contributed 200 African literature books valued at K45, 000 to Big Dreams School in Lusaka.
This is under the UBA foundation Read Africa programme which is aimed at rekindling the dwindling reading culture among African youths.
UBA’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm has developed an initiative known as Read Africa.
Through the programme, the foundation donates literature authored by African writers to primary and secondary schools across the continent
UBA Zambia Board, Tukiya Kankasa-Mabula, said UBA was proud of being a local bank that put the communities and their needs first.
Dr Kankasa-Mabula said this was part of the continued efforts to uplift the lives of the communities where
UBA operated.
“We have identified that the culture of reading is dwindling, we want to encourage you to read, it is important to read because books contain a lot of information.
“We believe you are the future and needs to be armed with tools to take our country to a higher level, you should have hope in yourselves,” she said during the handover of the books recently.
District Education Board Secretariat representative,
Kingston Mutandwa, thanked UBA for complementing Government’s efforts in providing learning materials to the pupils.
Mr Mutandwa said providing learning materials had remained a challenge for major schools in the country.
“These are rare opportunities where an organisation donates materials worth this amount and bring to a school.
“To the pupils, make use of what has been provided to the UBA, some schools have no such materials. Feel free to request for these materials and read and broaden your knowledge,” he said.
