‘Community schools need maximum support’

- By ANDREW MUKOMA

COMMUNITY Schools are important institutions which require maximum support from stakeholders because they offer education to the less privileged children, an expert has advised.

Manuu-mbwanu Community School proprietor, Reverend Smoke Chewe, appealed to Government and other stakeholders to support community schools with financial, teaching and learning resources.

He said his institution in Livingstone's Libuyu Township has particularly started a classroom expansion project which required assistance from well-wishers including Government.

Rev Chewe called for assistance for his institution to complete a classroom block which the school was constructing in order to accommodate learners.

He also called for assistance school learning materials to augment Government’s efforts in providing effective and equality education.

Rev Chewe made the appeal when PF Livingstone parliamentary aspirant Ikuka Muleta handed over K 2,000 which he pledged last week during the school initiated children's parliament demonstration.

He said being a community school, major challenges facing the school are finances to complete the project, payment of school fees and the supply of textbooks, exercise books and other learning materials.

He said currently, the school has a total of 721 learners with about 10 teachers who are not on Government payroll.

Rev Chewe said for a very long time now, the school had been making several appeals to well- wishers but there had been very little support.

He thanked Mr Muleta for fulfilling his pledge unlike others who had been making promises but which they did not fulfil.

Mr Muleta assured the school authorities of his support.
