CB voters’ registration still slow

- By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

THE ongoing mobile voter registration exercise in Kitwe and Ndola is still characterised by long queues due to the slow process.

A check by the Daily Nation in selected registration centres found only one machine being used for the process.

This is happening a week after the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) announced that it was dispatching additional staff and kits to ensure a speedy process.

The residents interviewed expressed disappointment with the ECZ for failure to fulfil the promises and address the matter.

One of the residents, Ms Emily Mwale, complained in Kitwe that the process was taking too long thereby discouraging people from registering.

Ms Mwale said people preferred staying home to spending more than four hours on the queue.

"Some us are marketeers and we cannot afford to leave our merchandise unattended to for some hours because we will have nothing to give our children," another Kitwe resident Joyce Kamwandi said.

In Ndola, there were still long queues at Franciscan Convent School in Mitengo and the situation was the same at Northrise School and other centres.

Some people complained that they were spending more than four hours on the queues

ECZ targets to register nine million voters by the close of the exercise on December 12, this year.

“Some us are marketeers and we cannot afford to leave our merchandise unattended to for some hours because we will have nothing to give our children,”
